Local History

100 Black Men of Greater Washington, D.C. (100 BMGWDC) was founded in 1995 in response to the call to action voiced during the Million Man March. A group of eleven professional Black men, concerned about the future of the youth in their community, came together and decided that it was their responsibility to step up and make a difference. Following the model of 100 Black Men of America, Inc., they established the Greater Washington, D.C. chapter as a member of the national organization.
Over the years the organization has grown in membership and status. With a dedicated and diverse membership base, including doctors, lawyers, STEM professionals, entrepreneurs, financial experts, teachers, educators, and business professionals, the organization is able to provide a broad range of support to its mentees.
Through our Four for the Future programmatic framework of Mentoring, Education, Economic Empowerment, and Health & Wellness, we’ve had the privilege of working with youth in the greatest need to help them establish, and achieve their goals. Since 1995, the organization has mentored over 15,000 students with a 100% graduation rate over the past five years.

National History

The 100 Black Men of America, Inc. was founded in 1963 as a national alliance of leading African American men in business, industry, public affairs, and government. The founders included men of integrity, honor, and distinction, like David Dinkins, Dr. William Hayling, Livingston Wingate, and Jackie Robinson. These men wanted to devote their combined skills and resources in order to confront the challenges facing African American youth. As a symbol of their solidarity, the group embraced the name, One Hundred Black Men.
