Joshua Burnell is senior at the Academy of Science (AOS) and Stone Bridge High School in Loudoun County, VA.  At AOS he chairs the engineer division of the robotics team.  At Stone Bridge, he is the President of the debate team and chairs the Lincoln Douglas division. Joshua is a member of the Math, Science, and Latin Honor Societies, as well as the National Honor Society and National Society of High School Scholars.

 

As a leader in his community, Joshua is a member of the Saturday Leadership Academy, 100 Black Men of Greater Washington, DC.  He has been a member of the academy for 6 years.  In 2014, Joshua received the Outstanding Mentee of the Year Award from 100 Black Men. He has also held leadership positions as parliamentary and legislative chair in other local youth organizations.

 

In preparation for college, he has completed several pre-engineering programs, namely at the University of Virginia, George Washington University, Purdue University, Michigan State University, University of Michigan, U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command – Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, and Summer Engineering with National Society of Black Engineers.  In addition to completing those pre-engineering programs, Joshua has attended leadership programs at Hampton University and Morehouse College.

 

In addition to attending school, Joshua has worked as a soccer referee and a junior instructor for Bricks for Kidz.  He has worked as a teacher for Academy for Enrichment, where he taught and developed curriculum in the following subject areas:  debate, inquisitive science, life science, roller coaster science, and middle school robotics.

 

Joshua has accepted an offer to attend North Carolina A&T State University, as a Dowdy Scholars.  He will pursue an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering with a focus in bio-medical engineering.  He will also continue his research to create a bone cracking detection location device.  Joshua’s goal is to be come a biomechanical medical technology engineer.

He wants to create wearable technology that will help diagnose health problems in real time.

Joshua is the son of Christopher and Tamiko Burnell, and big brother to Nicholas Burnell. Congratulations Joshua!!
